The weird update schedule is so I can "finish" this work this week--only a couple more pages to go in this chapter, probably releasing them Thursday and then Saturday nights.

Granted, there will be four epilogue pages, but I am going to make those once I port over Manga Studio to my new computer.

And AC, that MSV page isn't funny enough, so I'm not releasing it yet. And no, this isn't my promised "trolling" of y'all--this is me being honestly crappy at getting a page done.

People who've been taught proper Christian guilt often have trouble looking people in the eye if they're feeling guilty. Can you not think of a reason Eric might feel guilty about how things turned out with Tona and Trinity?

It's not consciously intentional on anyone's behalf--character or author.

Subconsciously, however...

Fair, most people have difficulty appreciating the humour in a chart. I can sympathize with finding it difficult to make one 'funny enough' for non-niche audiences. For reasons that are utterly embarrassing to a grey hat hacker I have a more... developed sense of the absurd in org charts, schedules and such.

I've really gotta wonder about what that C4 is supposed to accomplish besides being a messy threat though.

Did he mean to cover Tona's face, or was it one of those things where his limited array of pictures made it impossible to get a good one of his baby's mother (I refuse to say "baby mama")?

Or, was it a choice based on her tendency to go berserk? Literally the "berserk button"?

"Cannon" vs. Eric, eh? I wonder if you're going to leave enough of my OC there to at least give his mother an open casket?

My take on this is that he installed a custom "lock screen" app on his phone, which is clear except for the text and button, and allows his phone's "wallpaper" to show through. And the wallpaper is Tona + their child together. No significance to covering Tona's face, just how things worked out.

And I'll go out on a limb and say it's an Android phone, unless MacDonald knows how to crack an iPhone and customize it. Android phones allow for things like custom home pages and custom lock screens; Apple doesn't allow as much custom stuff on their phones.

I thought I knew what was going on but now I'm puzzled again. I don't know what MacDonald is up to now. I was picturing him sending C4 in via some sort of small wheeled vehicles[1], and then detonating it as soon as it was inside, totally ruining the days of the Aegis guys inside the building. Instead I guess he has enough C4 to blow a hole in the world, and he has a deadman switch and... what? Does he think Sonja will actually come and talk to him? What does he think she will say? Is he actually going to blow the whole building and everyone inside it including himself? (How many innocent people will that hurt and/or kill?)

Maybe he thinks he is so thoroughly wanted by government plus various bad guys that he must stay forever away from his daughter and his daughter's mom. Maybe he's thinking that if he blows up a bunch of bad guys, and goes along with them, the world would be a better place.

Of course this comic is twisty enough that his actual plan could be to fake his own death. But unless this is some sort of MacDonald-droid I don't see how this plan would work for that.

[1] Specifically I imagined hacked Roomba robots, each one rolling in with a little block of C4 on its back, pouring into the room full of Aegis guys from all entrances, and MacDonald pushing a Big Red Button on a remote while not being in the same room.

Fratricidal ordnance problem: If you don't perfectly synch the detonations of all your sub-munitions then some of them are going to splatter the others without them going off. Plus, how is Eric supposed to bring all those robots here and program them all, and debug the programs successfully, in advance? Eric is a pretty clever guy, and probably has some decent geeks behind him too, but swarm robot AIs are still a topic of DARPA-level research. Some damn arms manufacturer or another would've been bragging about it already if they sold a ready kit for custom, parametric, self-guided 3D ordnance deployment in arbitrary settings using commodity robotic frames for delivery.

@Steve: WAIT FOR IT...

@AC: That is a really nasty idea for future urban combat. But don't think it hasn't been tried already, at least via remote control. They used a rudimentary robotic kamikaze in that Dallas shootout, and insurgents in the Mideast have been strapping shit to skateboards and RC toys for while.

The autonomous part, though, that would make for some SRSly awesome war crimes/highly effective weaponry. Think "zergling rush" except if you don't tag the rat-sized robots, they'll blow your legs off.

I am familiar with the term IED, I know that delivery mechanisms have been self-propelled all the way from toy RC car up to human-occupancy-vehicle sized. I also know that the surest route to premature discovery is attack from multiple directions, so I'm very skeptical about simultaneous use of multiple robot or RC delivery systems in the same attack.

@AC RE: IEDs

Multistage ambushes are the holy grail, my friend. One blast to get everyone to go into recovery mode, the second blast to wipe out first responders/support personnel. And yes, I would heartily agree that it's no easy trick to pull that off... it also depends on the "hardness" of the target.

Full swarming with AI would be a difficult trick. Making Roombas go through a floor plan that is known ahead of time is at least as plausible as a secret Robocop-ish project (which we know is ongoing in the world of this comic). Assume MacDonald has volunteers driving the lead robots with a radio remote, and other robots just follow the leaders, and it becomes nearly trivial.

Yeah bomb fratricide could be a problem, but trivially solvable by using cheap computers (Raspberry Pi or whatever) with network-synched clocks, and have them all light off their detonators at the same moment. I'm not an expert but I think the detonations can be well underway before the shock waves of bombs reach the other bombs. In any event, optimal yields are not necessary to ruin the days of a bunch of fragile humans.

None of the above matters as I didn't actually write the script and it will be what it will be, not what I imagined.

I have to prese that Eric put his engineering skills to use and has been sneaking around putting the C4 where it would be most damaging. In other words, Plan C was probably laid in before he had to use it.

Remember that there are gaps in the timeline where we do not see him.

Plan A was probably "get Captain Happy to work with me"

I'm guessing Plan B was the drone.

Y'all got some srsfast paging skills. Dang.

There's Cannon! Holy crap there's a lot of red. It helps with pushing the tension.

To some extent this is the most impressive temper tantrum I've seen 'I'm gonna blow this up if I can't talk to X'.

I like the kind of loose, little bit crazed vibe to Eric's smile in the last panel.

In a different vein - is there a non-button-face version of Tona and Trin to be seen sometime? :D

There is a "clean" image of that phone image, I might even post it on the extras page.

edit: here it is. It's a mashup of an unpublished Tona pinup and another "extras" page I did a while ago.
